Eureka or Gold? Brick Wall Tumbled Down!

What GED Match can do for you!

My sister, my great right hand gal, had uploaded her RAW DNA from Ancestry.com into www.GEDMatch.com.  It is a free service by the way.

Your DNA belongs to you and Ancestry.com provides a way for you to download it onto your computer for your personal use.

So that's exactly what my sister did.  Then she uploaded it into GED match.com.

After many days when the group was full the DNA ran.  She was alerted that it was finished.

Then she was able to view her results as to whom she was related to and on which centamorgans.  It showed how close she's related to our dad.  Very very cool stuff!

Then on Monday evening she called me to say that she had been contacted by a related Dutch genealogist who also ran her Raw DNA through GED Match.com.  It showed a Dutch connection between them.

My sister provided her with some info.  She heard back from her along with 5 correct Dutch generations of our family.  Fantastic !!!

How lucky was that???  To me increadble.

These brick walls are tumbling down one by one with all the internet functions available to do your family history with

Can you count all of your cousins???

I thought I knew all of my possible 2nd cousins.  Guess what I was incorrect, yep  cause according to Ancestry.com  I have a new 2nd cousin.  Still don't know where we connect.

DNA results, Ancesters, Family origins, Family, Castles, DuSyl, DuCap, Sylvester, Babbitt, Paddock, Chaddock, Family history

My sister is so busy doing her best to sort it out.

You too can have a genealogy advantage  check out this test:  http://ldna.ancestry.com/aboutDNA.aspx

You too might find lots of relatives,  or at least someone who might have clues so you break down a brick wall.

Good Luck on your Ancester Hunting.

Using Message Boards To Help Find Your Elusive Ancestor

How many times I have posted to a Message board either on Genforum or Ancestry.com and I Have received a reply.

It works it has worked for me over 7 times.  I have posted to specific sub topics/Family name board.  I have received a message back.  It s normally a couple of years or less.  In 2010 I received a reply to a post that was almost 3 yrs. old.  They were so helpful.

I believe the only way someone is going to find out who your looking for is to let others know who your looking for.  By every means necessary.

My list includes:  Blog
                             GenForum.com

  Ancestry.com

Web sites that allow you post your research
Join your local Genealogy History Society, they will have a member section should allow you to list out who your researching.

Volunteer for Find A Grave   [Found a 8x removed cousin]
Your family web site [if you have one]
Sign Guest books of family web sites [ I found a cousin by this method it was non genealogy related though].

Happy Posting to these wonderful resources.  Remember to verify before you accept as fact.

How many of Us Family Historians Have been Fooled by less then Appropriate Back up Records?

Here it is 2012  still getting fooled by those who claimed to do the foot work. When in reality they found the info in a non back up scourced place.  We Love Sources, We Love Back Up Documents, We Love Family Bibles, We Love Journals, We Love Family Oral Tradition, We Love Pictures, We Love everything that can prove that a person WAS  who you say they are in the Right Place in the Right Time.

Hence David Putman.  I have his marriage to Dorothy Hainer listed in Niagara Ontario Book.  I have several Distant relatives that have done great amounts of work to reveal who his parents are.  Since I have been a user of Ancestry.com since 2007 I have been able to learn alot about my ancestors.  With several exceptions one being David Putman.  While on his Marriage recording list him as from Louth, Ontario.  No other info provided.  But on his son Johns census & other records list his father born in New York.

David Putman Dorothy Hainer Canada 1800's

Going along the line of David Putman being the son of Henry Putman & Hannah Anguish it was looking so promising.  Then when I wanted to announce that with undocumented authority of this is his most likely parents.  There again is a hard working cousin doing there part to bring me back to reality.  NO I need a record of to show he is him.   Well speaking of my cousin  what should he have the great luck of uncovering but Henry Putmans Will  oh yes a Will that bears no record of a David Putman born to Henry & Hannah.

You hear the Phrase "Back to the drawing Board"  O yea!  well  an update at some point in time can be forth coming.  Best of Luck In Your research.  Keep Hunting for Those Records!!!

DNA DNA DNA DNA DNA DNA DNA in DuSyl lines

Another day to add more thoughts and info.

We all know of those family members that roll their eyes when Genealogy/Family History is mentioned.  So just maybe they don't get how their very life depended on those that came before.

So if you haven't checked out my generations chart you might like a peek at it now.  An opening line could be:
"It took over 1 million ancestors to make me"  Will this get them thinking hey what about me  it is really that many?

Who knows it just might the right juice to get them involved.  Let me know if you have success with this idea.

My Story of how I connected with a Living cousin, With some research methodology applied

.
A Lost Cousin Found

I have a 2nd cousin who died in early 1970s I knew he had 2 daughters. So I decided to search for them. At the beginning with just putting in their last name and last know place of living into Google.  I found bits and pieces. Then I found a Cemetery where one had already died.  But I kept looking to find if the other daughter was still around.  So in using Google I just kept in putting in his name this way and that way.

Then I hit pay dirt.  Since my cousin was in the Navy and had served on a ship/Sub. His daughter had listed him in a web site for the sub he served on.  So I sent her an email.  It was a few weeks later then I did hear from her.  We emailed and spoke on the phone.  Found out that her sister had died in a fire.  That was sad to learn.  You never know what your cousins have been through.  I know it did her good to hear from me.  She has is very artistic I have been able to enjoy some of her work.   Since her dad was stationed in Massachusetts for a time when she was growing up were we able to share some fun memories of Mass and they way then language is spoken here. Great fun
My motto don't give up cause you just might find your needle in the next haystack.

New way of Thinking of the Ancestors Get to those Family Reunions

One fun thing about doing Genealogy is finding Cousins you did not know existed.

It is such a pleasure to find cousins.  They can be so helpful.

Cause what you learned from your parents or grandparents about your family can be confirmed or added on to from those cousins.

DNA, DNA Family, Family History, Family Lore

For example the Putman line in my family as far as my Dad & Aunt knew no county of origin was even ever discussed.

So tada enter in a new cousin now he knew from his dad that the Putman's are Dutch.  Well thats a great way to help me out.  So no more searching through the Putnam English lines.

Cause I know I have been looking in the Ontario Dutch lines to figure where My David Putman fits in.
