Armagh, former (until 1973) county, Northern Ireland. It was bounded by Lake Neagh (north), former County Tyrone (northwest), former County Down (east), and by the Republic of Ireland (south and west).
In late prehistoric times and at the dawn of history, Armagh was an important populated area in Ulster. At the beginning of the Christian era, the fortress of Emain Mhacha, at the site known as Navan Fort, served as the centre of a kingdom of Ulster extending to the Rivers Shannon and Boyne in the west and south. Also associated with that period is an ancient frontier earthwork, Black Pig's Dyke. Following the decline of Ulster in the 4th century, Emain Mhacha lost its importance; and Ard Mhacha (now Armagh, the county town) became the political centre. It gained added importance after St. Patrick made it his metropolitan see in the 5th century. The area was later ravaged by Anglo-Norman and also Danish (841) invaders, but they made no permanent settlements.
Not until the 17th century did English influence become important in the county. Made shire ground in 1586 and included in the scheme for the Plantation of Ulster of the early 17th century, Armagh was colonized mainly by Protestant landowners from England. Armagh's prosperity in the 18th century is attested to by many monuments and buildings. In the 1973 administrative reorganization of Northern Ireland, the county was divided into the district of Armagh and portions of Craigavon and Newry and Mourne districts.

Brick Walls Discussed 1 at a time: Martha Gray

Martha Gray

Know facts  She was adopted by the Gray Family.  No legal adoption records.  No knowledge of her birth place is known.

In the 1870 U.S. Census living with Wesley & Maria Gray in Garden MI  her age is listed as 9

making her birth year appx. 1860-62

In 1880 she is married to Daniel Kelly with one daughter.

In  1900 still married to Daniel Kelly  two children same daughter & one son.

On 18 Dec 1907 Martha dies of Cervical Cancer  have death cert.  Seeking Mich.

Have been wondering since there is a story with out know facts. That Isabella Gray brought her to Garden MI.  It is said she is a graddaughter.  No known child of Grays or other surrounding family shows a birth for a daughter.

Is it possible that the orphan train was her origin???

How to know which line to follow and for how long without any answers? Martha Gray/Strong

My experience has been Followin the direct line is best brings quickest results.   Then if an ancestor is elusive you will have to follow a different path.   The Cluster way of Genealogy.  When you can no longer follow your direct line it's time to skirt around it.  ie...  Grandmas mother mother no known paretns can be found.  Well did she have a sister or brother?  If yes then follow them.   If you are able to find out about them, then you should be able to then find out who their parents are.

I tried to do this for my GGGmother Martha Gray [Strong]   I have not had success.  No known birth records of the children. So there is no way to know what her parents names were.    It is most difficult since she had only 2 children one son & one daughter.  Her son died without marriage or offspring.  Her daughter was married twice had two children.  She died in her early 30's  No family history kept.

By the way this all took place in a tiny place called Garden, Delta,  Michigan. In the Upper Pennisula.

When Martha's children died their death records conflict of the known parents names.  On her daughters death cert. her name is Martha Gray  but on her sons death record she is listed as Martha Strong.

Facts I do know and have sources for.  She was living with Gray family in 1870  She married Mr Daniel Kelly had two children Hugh Thomas & Katherine.

It is believed that Martha was adopted by the Gray family.  There are No Adoption records for this.  In Daniel Kelly's Will the only child listed is his daughter & grandson.

Some would say the search is over you cannot go any further.  Follow the adopted family.  I have them. great family historythere.  So my search continues...

ReSearch Tips

So just when you think you can't find anything else out about what seems like the most Elusive Ancestor.
My suggestion  Read Re-read re-read one at a time the documents, forum post, messages from others interested in the same ancestor.  It all about gleaning that one clue stuck in that place which you may have missed more then once.  Cause if your anything like me.  It only pops out as important after you found that other piece of info first.  Then the Light goes off "thats It".

Then there are libraries that actually have Diaries or Journals that might have one snippet of info about that Ancestor.  I still have not found such a Help for myself.  But I just feel it that someone in the Little Village of Garden, Michigan had wriiten a little somthing about when Martha showed up.  My search ( & my sis GeGe) to find out the Parentage of our 2nd great Grandmother Martha Gray has been very elusive.  I gained the help of a Historical Society member who did everything possible to help me.  The one thing I did find out was that a notation in a Typed out genealogy on the Gray Family was penciled the word ADOPTED above her name.

Since this Village is small & a good distance from the County Seat understandable that there are No Adoption Records.  her husband Daniel Kelly did leave a Will,  I was able to obtain a copy.  But no family other then know decendants are listed in the will.  It was a good exercise to seek out the Will through Probate.   The one place I have found differing information is on her 2 childrens death certificate.  On My 1st Grandmothers her Mothers last name is Gray -the adopted family.  But now on her sons Death cert.  Her last name is Strong.

Garden Michigan, Gray, Kelly, Trueblood

Most intriguing is that death cert are only as good as the person suppling the info. It on their knowledge that its filled out.  Kinda like the census could be correct but then maybe not so correct.

So my search continues for Martha & parents.  If I could just accept her Adopted family that would be so easy.  Since they are the Gray & Truebloods.
