Lake Erie from Ohio point of View

Lake Erie

David Putman, Lake Erie Ship Wrecks, Ancestry, Familylore, research, Great lakes, Family Fun
Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes and currently serves as part of Ohio's northern boundary. During the 1700s and 1800s, Lake Erie provided a quick means of transportation for men engaged in the fur trade as well as settlers hoping to improve their fortunes in the Ohio Country. Its importance grew during the 1810s and the 1820s as Americans began to build canals. The completion of the Erie Canal, connecting the Hudson River in New York with Lake Erie, provided the first navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the upper Midwest. This allowed farmers in Ohio a relatively quick and inexpensive route to transport their products to market. Cleveland quickly grew and became one of the leading industrial centers of Ohio thanks to its location on Lake Erie.

Here are some things I have discovered:

Newspaper clipping web site Maritime History Of The Great Lakes.,

Chapter XVI - Lake Navigation

The first vessel to sail the waters of Lake Erie was built by Robert Cavalier de la Salle, an adventurous Frenchman, on the Niagara River, six miles above the Falls, in the year 1677. She was named the Griffin, and was of sixty tons burthen. La Salle navigated Lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan, to Green Bay, in the present State of Wisconsin, where, with a picked number of men, he left the vessel and marched overland to the Mississippi. The remainder of the crew attempted to return to the Niagara, and are supposed to have been lost in a storm, as neither vessel nor men were heard from afterward. Nearly a hundred years later the French built another sailing vessel with which they undertook to navigate the lake. This second venture was as unsuccessful as the first, the vessel having foundered and forty-nine of her crew having been drowned.

No record is to be found of any other sailing vessel on the lake until 1766, when the British, who had secured possession of both shores, built and launched four. They were of light burthen, and were chiefly used for carrying troops and army supplies. All transportation of a commercial character, and all of the very limited passenger business was carried on by batteaux until after the close of the Revolutionary war. They kept close to the shore, were mainly propelled by paddles or oars, and if a sail was used it was simply a blanket fastened to a pole, to take advantage of favorable winds. The earliest American sailing vessel on the lake was a small boat, owned and run by Capt. William Lee, in which he carried passengers and light articles of freight between Buffalo and Erie. She was constructed to use oars in going against the wind, and had no crew, the passengers being obliged to work for their passage.

The first sailing vessel built on the south shore of Lake Erie was the sloop Washington, of thirty tons, under the superintendence of Eliphalet Beebe, at the mouth of Four Mile Creek, for the Pennsylvania Population Company, owners of the bulk of the land in the Triangle. She was launched in September, 1798, was employed for some twelve years in the service of the company, and was removed on rollers across the Niagara Peninsula, to Lake Ontario in 1810, where she was lost. The first vessel launched at Erie was built at the mouth of Mill Creek, in 1799, Capt. Lee and Rufus S. Reed being her principal owners. She was named the Good Intent and sunk at Point Albino in 1806, with all on board. The Harlequin, built at Erie in 1800, by Mr. Beebe, was also lost the first season, with her entire crew. About 1801, the Wilkinson, of sixty-five tons, was owned at Erie. She was commanded by Capt. Daniel Dobbins, in 1805. Another early Erie vessel was the schooner Mary, of 100 tons, built by Thomas Wilson, 1805.

Now to just find out where the ship was built???

Van Valkenburg Castle

If you fly right on over to Holland/ Belgium

You could find Castles  if you are a descendant of the Van Valkenburg you would be thrilled to go and see where these ancestors came from.

My Van Valkenburg is from Dorothy Hainer daughter of Albert Hainer & Catherine Vollick.  Dorothy was born in Ontario.  She married David Putman in Niagara, Ontario

Present day Ariel view of Castle Van Valkenburg

It's so fun to find out my Family History!!!

'

"How the Castle
Came to Ruin

The story starts in the year 1648, when Holland became an independent nation, after being a Spanish colony. The southern provincies (now Belgium) however, remained Spanish soil. The borders were unclear which resulted into many struggles and battles.
The Spanish presence was weak (too far away from the homeland), so there was pressure from Holland and from France to conquer those provinces.
The French king Louis XIV was successful as he pushed north and conquered Valkenburg. Maastricht (the province capital) remained a strong Dutch bastion, but now under threat from the Valkenburg fortress.
Stadtholder Willem III (in Maastricht) sent "commandos" to Valkenburg and captured the city for a special mission:
On December 6th, 1672, the castle was blown up with gunpowder and explosives. Willem III decided not to conquer the town and to use the castle as a fortress, but simply to destroy and leave. This was effective, because the French were no now longer interested. With Valkenburg eliminated as a stronghold the town became a quiet village with little strategic importance for centuries to come. Stadtholder Willem III later went on to become King William III of England."

"Valkenburg

There are actually three Valkenburg towns in the Netherlands: Valkenburg aan de Geul (Valkenburg on the Geul River), Oud Valkenburg (Old Valkenburg), both in the Limburg Province in the southeast of the Netherlands, near Maastricht.

See vvv South Limburg and http://www.visitvalkenburg.nl (in Dutch)

There is also Valkenburg, Zuid-Holland (Valkenburg South Holland) on the Rijn river not too far from Leiden, which is noted for having a big Royal Navy - NATO airbase and which had a large archeaological dig of ancient Roman hill-forts during the 1980s. "

A Putman Family Quandary

A Putman Family Quandary

Using Family Search I found a Dora Putman/Dolenson, on her marriage record in 1903 to George Wallace, with her parents listed as John Putman & Marilla Cooke.  I have not found a birth record for a Dora Putman born to a John Putman & Marilla Cooke.  Do you know who this Dora Putman is?

I also found Dora Putman in the 1880 census in Ionia Michigan working as a servant.  Her daughter Pearl Putman is also living in the Wallace household.
If Dora is not a daughter of John & Marilla Putman then why would she have put them as her parents on the Marriage certificate?

On the above mentioned marriage certificate the witnesses of the marriage are a Mrs Pearl Stearns & Ormond Donelson.
If you can help with this Putman Quandary please do.
The comment section at the bottom of this post will do.

Putman Family Line

Putman genealogy of David Putman & wife Dorothy Hainer

Many Putman descendants have been working to find a conclusive answer for David’s origins.  Many have thought they have found the correct parents, then their way of seeing it is dashed when a piece of evidence let them know they have to begin again.  UGGGHHHH  I know we all feel the Pain.

I am here to of course keep inspiring all of us to keep looking for that answer.

I do not have an answer yet.  Well if you are a male directly  descended from our said David Putman.  Which means you your dad and his dad & his dad & his dad& his dad gets you directly linked to David. [ All men with direct links & last names of Putman.]  Would you be willing to take the Y-DNA test.  That would help all of us out.
So if your fathers line is from David & Dorothys sons lines and you carry the Putman name from your father.  Well you can do a cheek swab.

David Putman

David Putman b. 1783 ???   quandry.

I know with surety that in Ontario after the Revolutionary War  that there were ? families with names of Putman.  None of these families had a son by the name of David.

To me David had to come from somewhere else.  Where from ? and Why did he come to Ontario?

All of these are unknown.  Need records, Need family history of his children

Method to find his parents.

Go through every Putman family that lived in or around NY NJ PA and OH? in the late 1700's. This is where known Putman families lived at the time.

Did any have a son named David?  Was the David born around 1783?

What was the circumstances of the time?

What would cause David to leave his home & hearth & venture to unknown territory?

Was he involved in the war of 1812?

Has someone  else found about him?

He lived in Wainfleet Ontario

Brick Walls In genealogy

One of my highest Brick walls is David Putman.  Always hoping I am going to finally burst through.  Yet again I get a new clue that just gets me no where again.  DO I Give Up NO Way Hose B.

However a new place of his possible origins has been given to me.  So I wonder did he change his name?  To be someone else so he did not have owe up to his father.  All very very curious possibilities.

I need to have that male Putman cousin of mine take a DNA test to find out

1. Are we really descended from Putman

2. To find the rest of the family to be able to let them know of other relatives.

David Putman back in my Sights

Oh where are you from dear David Putman?   New York?  Canada?    What about Michigan?  Or maybe from Pennsylvania?

I am going to find you.   Last place I left you was in a book.  Where they claim you did something Naughty & Not Nice.

But now I have just read about that your Vessel sank near Crystal Beach on your way to Black Rock.  You made it to safe land with getting out of the ship wreck via life boat.  Making your way up Chippewa Creek.

I now read how you never let your parents or siblings know you were alive and living in Ontario on the Niagara Pennisula.  Should we be upset with you.  Why of course not since If you did not go up that creek and make your way to a new life I would not be here.
Thank you

How many of Us Family Historians Have been Fooled by less then Appropriate Back up Records?

Here it is 2012  still getting fooled by those who claimed to do the foot work. When in reality they found the info in a non back up scourced place.  We Love Sources, We Love Back Up Documents, We Love Family Bibles, We Love Journals, We Love Family Oral Tradition, We Love Pictures, We Love everything that can prove that a person WAS  who you say they are in the Right Place in the Right Time.

Hence David Putman.  I have his marriage to Dorothy Hainer listed in Niagara Ontario Book.  I have several Distant relatives that have done great amounts of work to reveal who his parents are.  Since I have been a user of Ancestry.com since 2007 I have been able to learn alot about my ancestors.  With several exceptions one being David Putman.  While on his Marriage recording list him as from Louth, Ontario.  No other info provided.  But on his son Johns census & other records list his father born in New York.

David Putman Dorothy Hainer Canada 1800's

Going along the line of David Putman being the son of Henry Putman & Hannah Anguish it was looking so promising.  Then when I wanted to announce that with undocumented authority of this is his most likely parents.  There again is a hard working cousin doing there part to bring me back to reality.  NO I need a record of to show he is him.   Well speaking of my cousin  what should he have the great luck of uncovering but Henry Putmans Will  oh yes a Will that bears no record of a David Putman born to Henry & Hannah.

You hear the Phrase "Back to the drawing Board"  O yea!  well  an update at some point in time can be forth coming.  Best of Luck In Your research.  Keep Hunting for Those Records!!!
